*Nice Hardware and Software With Potential
This is my first entry into home automation, and I'm fairly impressed with this starter kit.
First, I like the door lock. It's an attractive, sturdy looking piece of hardware with an easy action lever; my children with their small hands have a lot easier time with levers than with knobs, and who hasn't struggled with a door knob when bringing in a load of groceries? However, the number buttons are small and slippery, thus taking some concentration to press. Pressing the "Schlage" button over the keyboard does light them up for easy reading, but a visitor might not knows this and struggle to type in their PIN in the dark. One security reason for the small, slippery button design might be to prevent uneven visible wear of the 4 buttons you actually press; I'm sure that's why the printed number is below the surface.
Installation, which in my case was a replacement, took less than 20 minutes. If you've replaced door hardware before, the only extra steps involve...
*Fairly complex, but with few features
WHAT IS IN THE BOX?
This replaces a simple knob lock (like the knob on your bedroom door). It is not a deadbolt set. It gives you an inside and outside lever and a strike plate. The photo at the top of the item description shows what you get. The photo further down in the detail of the item description (with the maid) shows a deadbolt. You do not get this.
You also get a plug-in-between light controller and a small box that attaches to your internet router (it requires an empty ethernet port). You get two standard keys for the lock.
PHYSICAL INSTALLATION OF THE LOCK
Installation was pretty simple if you have ever swapped out a lock. Initially the tongue part got stuck, but after I worked it a bit, it loosened up. The inside plate (with the plastic battery box) was a bit tricky to lineup.

Installation of the Lock:
This went well and was completed within 15 minutes including removal of the old lock.I followed the documentation step by step and had the lock functional and tested the codes provided and both codes worked without issue.
This lock unit is solid, there is some cheap plastic that lets the device down a little in the appearance department (on the back side)but the external unit is very nice and very solid.One disappointment I had is that changing batteries requires removal of a portion of internal housing. Why not have a slide out unit to hold the batteries - this could be engineered a little better but it's a minor gripe.

Review : Feel like a king now
Don't live in a castle but I sure feel like a king after installing my new Baldwin Medina handle set.
One single let down: I have a double door setting but only one door is used. Unfortunately, since Baldwin does not have a dummy set for situations like I ended up buying two sets of handles.
I would give the product a 5-star rating if they had a dummy set but since this is NOT the case I dropped 1 star for making me spend more money than I think is fair.
Other than that the products is very elegant, sturdy, and beautiful. Installation was extremely easy and fun. Instructions were pretty straight forward and packaging is very professional – it even included a second handle in case you need to choose right or left installation. I assure you will be happy with the end result despite the relatively high price/ investment – it will pay off.

Love this lock set. Great quality, looks terrific. You can code I think 20 different codes, not that you ever would. And change or remove the codes too. Key available too if you want. We gave ours to the contractor who installed the door. But my son-in-law installed his own and didn't have any big issues. There's a small blue light over the combination keys for nighttime entrance. The levers all turn smoothly. This costs more than the typical options at the hardware store but so worth it. Found it as a top item in Consumer Reports.com

I bought this to replace my old Kwikset handleset, which was 16 years old and dead. Though it looked the same, it was a little smaller. But it works fine. One important thing to note, which is not made clear in the advertising, is that the package contains both a left- and right-opening lever handle, so you can use it on any exterior door.
*SmartKey Fails
I purchased the Arlington handleset with the Smart Key single cylinder for a new house. Two days later, the key refused to work in the cylinder as I was attempting to lock the front door to leave. I returned the set to the store and exchanged for an identical handleset, only to have that one fail 3 days later, this time when trying to open the door upon my return. I never even used the Smart Key feature on the original cylinder, and after exchanging I successfully rekeyed the doorknob on the garage entry door to match the new deadbolt's key (rather than rekeying the front door deadbolt, lest I give it a reason to fail as the original did, which it ended up doing anyway).
Now I'm either stuck with the handle because of it's larger-than-average distance (11") between the standard hardware hole and the smaller hole I drilled to secure the base of the handle in my metal door (the deadbolt would go in the trash), or filling in the base hole, sanding, and repainting my door. In...
*Smart Key mechanism eventually failed
I've had this lock for nearly three years now. We seldom re-key it, but it's always been finicky, needing some jiggling of the key. We found that occasionally using the re-key mechanism to the same key would reset it and make it smoother again. Now it's failed completely, to where no key will open it. I disassembled it and found four of the five wafers which allow rekeying to be completely out of place, not retained. After figuring out how it worked and reassembling it properly (yes, I know what I'm doing) it worked for a few lock-unlock cycles then failed again in the same manner. The mechanism is not reliable.
I'll comment later on how Kwikset deals with my complaint.

I bought this set because this is what was on display at a big box store but they didn't keep it in stock and going through Amazon got it too me much quicker and saved me about $20.
My initial thoughts once I received it were great. The set is very heavy and seemed to be well built. It took me about 30 min to remove the old door hardware and install the Kwikset hardware. Everything was going smooth until it came time to install the deadbolt portion of the set. I question the quality or better yet the quality control of the product because one of the two holes that accept the bolts/screws for the backside of the deadbolt was off by about 15*. I tried to get the deadbolt to line up a couple of times and ended up stripping out the bolt. This was frustrating because although the deadbolt was secure with one bolt in place, I didn't expect an issue like this with a higher-end set.
I called the Kwikset customer service and the guy I spoke with was very nice and...

This kwikset handle set is a great buy. In all of my local home improvement stores this model is a special order product. So I wasn't able to purchase in store. Although I was able to see the actual model in the store. Amazon had the best price because I wasn't going to find this specific type on sale in stores. I was able to take advantage of free shipping so overall it was great. Some difficulty to install if you have never installed a simple door knob but otherwise pretty easy just following the directions.
